Amritha Murali, born on 16 July 1982 to Smt.Rema and Sri.G. Murali, is an established vocalist and an accomplished violinist. Amritha continued to do both comfortably until recently when she decided to concentrate on her solo performances as a vocalist and also to resolve this identity crisis of whether she is a violinist or vocalist. Hardworking and dedicated to the art, she is among the more talented Carnatic vocalists of today. Amritha enjoys a musical pedigree that includes some outstanding gurus. Amritha had her initial lessons in vocal music from her grandmother Smt Rajam Nagarajan and advanced lessons from great musicians - Vidvan Shri K R Kedaranathan, Vidushi Smt Meera Kedaranathan, Vidushi Smt Rama Ravi and Vidvan Shri P.S.Narayanaswamy. She is currently under the tutelage of Vidvan Shri R.K.Shriramkumar. She is also adept at playing the violin and is a disciple of Vidushi Smt.T.Rukmini. An A grade artist of All India Radio and Doordarshan, Amritha has performed in many prestigious music festivals in India and abroad. She has received many awards and accolades including the Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar from the Central Sangeet Natak Akademi, Kalki Krishnamurthy Memorial Award, and Kala Ratna from the Cleveland Thyagaraja Aradhana Committee etc.

Muthuswami Dikshidar composed this song on Thagaraja, “the king of renunciates,” a unique form of Lord Siva and the presiding deity of the great temple at Tiruvarur, the birthplace of the Carnatic Trinity. In this krithi, Dikshidar extols Thyagaraja as the cosmic yogi and the supreme reality, whose divine presence encompasses time, creation, and all thatwas (principles of existence). He is both the giver of worldly joy and the bestower of moksha, radiating as the self-effulgent truth that pervades the universe.

Meaning:

I always seek refuge in Sadasiva, the one who is Thyagaraja with the grandeur of Yoga, the glory of Himavan (the king of mountains), the splendour of royal majesty, the exaltation of Yoga, the magnificent one, the origin of this universe, and the one signified by the mantra ‘vam’, the ambrosial essence. (The repetitions "agaraja, raja, yoga, vaibhava" etc. are swarakṣhara patterns used for musical beauty, emphasizing the grandeur of Shiva’s yoga form.)

I seek refuge in him whose feet are praised by the king of serpents, who is the repository of the principles of Nada, Bindu, and Kala, whose feet are known only to the greatest of Yogis, who can simultaneously bestow both worldly enjoyment and liberation, who performs the acts of creation and dissolution of this universe ( composed of manifold names and forms arising from his yogic power ) and who, as the very principle of Time, remains hidden within the cycles of Yugas, years, months, days, and even ghaṭikas (units of twenty-four minutes).

I seek refuge in him, the father of Guruguha, the embodiment of existence, consciousness, and bliss, the Lord of Bhairavi (Parvathi), the one who has expanded as all principles beginning with Siva and Sakthi, the very embodiment of beneficence, the effulgent one who shines in his own true nature, who manifests as the ultimate truth, who appears as all realities, and who radiates as the essence of all principles starting from Siva and Sakthi.
