Our series of Yorkshire Dales videos continues with this look around Askrigg, once the filming location for All Creatures Great and Small, and more recently in the news for a controversy around it's village church tower.

Nestled in the heart of Wensleydale within the Yorkshire Dales National Park, Askrigg is a charming and historic village that exudes quintessential Dales character. Askrigg boasts a rich history, with mentions dating back to the Domesday Book of 1086, where it was recorded as "Ascric." The name itself has Viking origins, meaning "ridge of ashes." Granted a market charter by Elizabeth I in 1587, Askrigg flourished, particularly in the 18th century, when it became known for its textile trade and skilled clockmakers. Evidence of this prosperous past can still be seen in the village's architecture and the presence of the old market cross and bull ring. More recently, Askrigg gained fame as the fictional village of Darrowby in the beloved BBC television series "All Creatures Great and Small," with several local buildings serving as key filming locations, drawing fans eager to connect with the show's heartwarming portrayal of rural life.
