Step into the Texas Hill Country for a climb up the West Peak Overlook Trail at Texas Hill Country State Natural Area. This hike may be short, but it packs a punch with its steep climb and rugged terrain — and the reward is worth every step. At the top, you’re greeted with near-360° panoramic views of canyons, rocky ridges, and the wide-open Texas skies at nearly 1,868 feet elevation.
Along the way, I spotted an Eastern Cottontail rabbit, a fast-moving Spotted Whiptail lizard flicking its tail like a tiny velociraptor, and wildflowers like Texas Skeleton plant and Blazing Star adding splashes of color to the rocky trail. Clusters of Carolina Buckthorn berries lined parts of the path, attracting birds and other wildlife.
This trail is a staff favorite for a reason — it’s challenging but not too long, perfect for a sunrise or late-afternoon hike. Good shoes, plenty of water, and a little patience on the rocky sections make for a safe, enjoyable trip.
