Aransas National Wildlife Refuge | Texas Gulf Coast Wildlife & Scenery

Aransas National Wildlife Refuge is one of the most important protected landscapes on the Texas Gulf Coast, and in this video I explore what makes this place so unique. Located just outside Rockport, Texas, Aransas preserves more than 115,000 acres of coastal marsh, bay, prairie, and woodland, offering some of the most scenic and ecologically significant habitat in the region.

This visit takes you throughout the refuge — from entrance and visitor areas to trails, observation points, piers, and elevated viewpoints that provide some of the best views in the entire refuge. Along the way, I explore places like Big Tree Trail and Heron Flats Trail, highlighting the experience of moving through these coastal environments and what visitors can expect when they come here themselves.

While wildlife sightings are never guaranteed, Aransas is well known for the species that live here. In this video, I talk about animals commonly found in the refuge, including American alligators, whitetail deer, and javelinas. On this visit, I was able to encounter javelinas on two separate occasions, getting an up-close look at these uniquely Texas animals while respecting their space.

Aransas National Wildlife Refuge is most famous as the primary winter home of the endangered whooping crane. I share factual insight into why these cranes rely on the Texas coast, what they feed on, and why the refuge plays such a critical role in their survival. The refuge also supports hundreds of bird species and sits along a major migratory pathway on the Gulf Coast.

This video also provides context on the history, purpose, and long-term conservation importance of Aransas, which was established in 1937 and is managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The refuge exists today because large areas of the Texas coast were protected before development took over — allowing entire ecosystems to remain intact and functional.
