Our Town and Trail journey took us to Bastrop State Park, a jewel among Texas state parks in Bastrop. Texas was suffering from a severe drought when the Bastrop Wildfires of 2011 started. It is believed that the fires were caused by trees falling onto power lines.
Fire burned approximately 34,000 acres, including 95% of Bastrop State Park. Over five thousand people were forced to evacuate their homes and around seventeen-hundred structures were destroyed. It took thirty-six days to fully extinguish the wildfires.
Over the past decade and a half, tremendous efforts have been expended to help restore Bastrop State Park’s ecology. Over 4 million loblolly pine seedlings have been planted; erosion barriers have been installed to stabilize loose soil; controlled burns have been employed to reduce wildfire fuel sources; and trails have been rebuilt.
After the devastating wildfires of 2011, it is wonderful to see the regrowth and recovery of Bastrop State Park.
