A beautiful vineyard along the small river of Zangaura in a famous Kindzmarauli appellation zone is the home of Rare and Zangaura wines, made by a former particle physicist, Merab Buzaladze.
Years ago, the same land belonged to Merab's great-grandfather, but it got confiscated and nationalized during the Soviet era. As the family continued to treasure memories around the seized vineyard, this land has never lost relevance, and in 2004, they were able to repurchase it.
The first grape Merab knew to plant was Saperavi, the taste of which he still remembered from his great-grandfather's vineyard. Today, Merab makes modern-style wines under the 'Zangaura' brand name and traditional qvevri wines under the 'Rare' label, which stands for the rare Georgian varieties, and includes over 30 different grapes.
