Alton Towers is a former country estate located near the village of Alton in Staffordshire, England. It was a former seat of the Earls of Shrewsbury. It is now a major theme park in the United Kingdom. The area around Alton Towers has been occupied for more than a thousand years.
Alton Towers dates back as far as the 8th century when the Towers site became a fortress held by Ceolred, King of Mercia. The Earls of Shrewsbury occupied the castle from 1412 when the Lady Ankarat de Verdun married Sir John Talbot – the title remained in the same family until the 1920s.The towers were home to the Talbot family and associated Earls of Shrewsbury until 1924, after which they were abandoned as accommodation
