New York, Susquehanna & Western 142: Steam Returns to the Delaware

After eight years, the echoes of whistles and stack talk filled the Delaware River Valley once again along the route of the Bel-Del! New York, Susquehanna & Western 142 returned to steam on October 4th, 2025 to much fanfare after a long restoration period to complete the federally-mandated 1,472 day inspection. The "SY" Class Mikado took charge of the railroad's River Train excursions, doubling as The Great Pumpkin Train for the month of October, sporting five former Long Island Railroad P72 coaches and GP9 811. Throughout this presentation, we'll watch as 142 trundles along the picturesque Bel-Del rain or shine, leading the train over winding creeks and along the tight quarters of River Road to the Riegelsville Station, marking the furthest distance south that steam has operated since the beginning of service! The Belvidere & Delaware River has something for everyone, and we'll enjoy all it has to offer!

History of the New York, Susquehanna & Western 142:
A rarity among North American steam engines, 142 shares the distinction of being one of only a hanful of operating Chinese-built locomotives in the United States. Furthermore, the locomotive celebrated its 36th birthday in 2025, rolling out of the Tangshan Locomotive and Rolling Stock Works in May 1989. Ordered by the Valley Railroad, the locomotive made its debut run in 1990 on the VALE with a design altered to meet American standards. With the unfortunate sinking of the NYS&W 141 in transit from China, the Susquehanna opted to purchase the Valley's engine in late 1991, being numbered 142, in sequence behind the original 141. After purchase by the Susquehanna, the locomotive ran excursion trips all over the railroad's system and beyond, including such famous trips as doubleheading with Chesapeake & Ohio 614! New management in the early 2000s saw the disposal of the railroad's passenger and excursion fleet, including the 142. In 2003, the New York, Susquehanna & Western Technical & Historical Society took ownership of the engine, running it on various excursions until December 2006, where the locomotive went down for a 1,472 day inspection. From June 2007 to September 2017, the locomotive powered excursions along the Bel-Del. In 2017, it was again due for another 1,472 day inspection, returning to service in October 2025, ready for many more years of service!
