California is widely considered the most biodiverse state in the United States with the highest number of endemic species. Among many distinctions, it is home to some of the largest, tallest, and oldest living organisms on the planet. While the state's size helps, it is largely the unique tectonic history and varied rock types that form the bedrock foundation for the soils, topography, and climates that give rise to a diversity of life. This talk will provide an overview of the geologic history that helped build California and shape its landscapes. Many vignettes will be highlighted on our journey through time and space across the Golden State, including a spotlight on the Riverside area.
Dr. Nicolas Barth is an Associate Professor of Geology at the University of California, Riverside. He received a BSc & MSc in Geology at UC Santa Barbara and a PhD at the University of Otago in New Zealand. Among diverse research interests, his main aim is to improve our understanding of active faults and the evolution of landscapes. He serves the Riverside community through roles with Riverside County Parks Foundation, Friends of Riverside's Hills, and as a Commissioner for the Riverside Parks District Advisory Commission.
