In this program, Ernesto Alvarado guides you through the basics of garden design with California native plants and the necessary steps to create a native garden that is right for you. He will cover some easy to grow native plants that are especially good for beginners.
Ernesto's appreciation for the beauty and importance of California native plants led him to involvement in growing native plants for coastal restoration projects for the endangered El Segundo blue butterfly (Euphilotes battoides allyni). His has a degree in Wildlife Management and Conservation from Humboldt State University. Since then, he has been involved in growing native plants, including at Rancho Santa Ana (now California) Botanic Garden, including many native cultivars ideal for the California garden. His interest in native plants, horticulture, and gardens led to further studies in landscaping design and study of the growing conditions experienced by native plants in the wild as well as in gardens. His passion and curiosity for native plants continues to thrive as he grows local native plants for Riverside Corona Resource Conservation District’s (RCRCD's) restoration projects, collects plant materials for propagation, and looks after the gardens and habitat at the RCRCD's Land Use Learning Center.
