Tchaikovsky composed his 'Romeo and Juliet' Overture at the suggestion of Balakirev, a composer noted for his championship of his fellow Russians. However, he wasn't happy with Tchaikovsky's first thoughts, so the work was revised at Balakirev's suggestions, not once but twice, and it is the familar third version which is played today, having become one of Tchaikovsky's most famous and popular works.
However, there is a case for hearing Tchaikovsky's original score and this was realised by Geoffrey Simon and the London Symphony Orchestra in 1981 when it was recorded in a Chandos album of "First Recordings" of other Tchaikovsky works. As will be heard, there are many familar moments among the discarded passages but it is always interesting to hear a masterpiece as it was first conceived.
