Leopold Stokowski conducted Beethoven's 5th Symphony for the first time with the Cincinnati Orchestra in 1909. Sixty years later, at the age of 87, he conducted the work in a London Philharmonic concert in preparation for a 'Phase 4 Stereo' recording to be made a few days later. Here is that TV transmission, filmed in the Fairfield Hall, Croydon, on 8 September 1969. You will hear Bernard Keeffe, the announcer at the end of the broadcast, referring to Stokowski's performance as "stunning" and I am sure few would disagree!
