ACCA has announced a new qualification structure that will affect future accountants. In this video, the speaker will explain the changes, their effectiveness, and their impact on students. To qualify as an ACCA member, candidates must pass 11 exam papers, complete the Ethics and Professional Skills Module (EPSM), and fulfill 36 months of approved practical experience. These elements are simplified as Exams, Modules, and Experience (EME).
The redesigned qualification maintains the EME structure but changes details. The exam papers are still categorized into three levels, now called Knowledge, Expertise, and Strategic Professional. Students only need to pass 11 papers instead of 13. For the module requirement, students must complete three essential employability modules, one for each level. The practical experience requirement remains unchanged at 36 months but offers more options for students.
At the Knowledge level, the subjects include financial accounting, management accounting, business law, and the new Responsible Business Management Module, replacing the Business and Technology exam. Completing this level earns a higher diploma and the opportunity for a certified accounting technician qualification. The Expertise level focuses on specialized topics like audit, tax, and financial reporting, including a new Digital Tag and Innovation Module. Successful completion at this level awards an advanced diploma and a chance to earn a BSc in Professional Accountancy.
At the Strategic Professional level, candidates take two core exams—Business and Sustainability Reporting, and Strategic Business Leadership—and choose one optional exam from areas like audit, corporate finance, and the new Data Science professional option. The Ethics and Professional Skills Module will be replaced by the Ethical Sustainable Leadership Module. Students will now only need to pass one optional exam instead of two.
Students can start at various levels based on their previous qualifications, with options available for those without prior accountancy education. Optional employability modules are also introduced to help students build skills for their careers. These modules cover areas like accounting software, cloud accounting, and technology like AI. To earn the qualification, candidates need 36 months of relevant supervised experience, and up to six months can be from the optional employability modules.
The first syllabus for the Knowledge exam will be released in November 2025, along with sample exams and guidance. The Expertise and Strategic Professional Exams guidance will be available in March 2026. The last sitting of the current Applied Skills and Strategic Professional exams will be in June 2027, with the new Knowledge exams starting in July 2027 and the others in September 2027.
Affiliate members who complete all exams and the EPSM will not be affected. Those who haven't completed the EPSM by September 2027 must take the new Ethical Sustainable Leadership Module. The transition process for current students will vary based on their progress, with credits given for previous exams passed. For details on how these changes impact students, affiliates, and members, the ACCA website will provide additional information. Viewers are encouraged to subscribe to stay updated.
