This exercise will prepare to play tunes like Drowsy Maggie, Devil's Dream, Swallowtail Jig, and Harvest Home which combine string crossing and fingering.
The basic exercise is:
D0-A0-D1-A0
Once you can do this easily, try adding rhythms like hoedown, triplets, swing doubles, peri-diddle, the polyrhythm, etc.
Then extend the exercise to other fingers:
D1-A0-D2-A0
Then try a longer sequence:
D0-A0-D1-A0-D2-A0-D3-A0-D4-A0
Then finger the A string instead of the D string.
D0-A0-D0-A1-D0-A2-D0-A3
All the while making it interesting by adding rhythms.
