The Japanese women's volleyball team, ranked 4th in the FIVB world rankings, faced off against Turkey, ranked 6th, and won after a full set score of 3-2 (25-21, 16-25, 25-20, 22-25, 15-9), advancing to the semi-finals.
Early in the first set, a service ace from Ishikawa Mayu and a block from Miyabe Airi gave Turkey a 6-2 lead, at which point they called their first timeout. While Turkey made a noticeable number of mistakes, Japan steadily added points, widening their lead to 10-5. From the middle of the set onwards, spikes from Sato Yoshino and Wada Yukiko led to a score of 17-10, at which point Turkey called for a second timeout. Japan continued to win rallies with tenacious receives, but Turkey, armed with powerful serves and high blocks, started to catch up, and with the score at 23-19, Japan called their first timeout. A serve error from the opponent gave Japan set point, and Shimamura Haruyo scored a spike to take the lead at 25-21.
In the second set, Japan was caught by Turkey's blocks from the beginning, and the score was 1-4, so they called their first timeout early. Sato and Wada spiked to close the gap to two points, but they were caught by Turkey's blocks at key points and were unable to close the gap to 9-12. After that, Turkey continued to block and the score was 9-15, so Kitamado Ayane was substituted for Wada and Akimoto Misora was substituted for Sato, but the lead was extended to 10-17, and Japan called a second timeout. Turkey made fewer mistakes, and although Akimoto and Ishikawa spiked to get side outs, Japan was unable to break and was down to 14-21. They were unable to close the gap in the final stages, and lost the set 16-25.
In the third set, a serve from Ishikawa and a spike from Wada gave Japan a break and a 3-1 lead. Miyabe's block and a spike mistake from the opponent extended the lead to 10-6, at which point Turkey took their first timeout. As Turkey continued to make mistakes, Japan steadily attacked and widened the gap to 13-8. In the middle part of the game, both teams scored side-outs, and Miyabe's block and a spike mistake from the opponent left Japan at 20-17 as the game entered the final stages. They were caught by a Turkish block and the gap narrowed to 20-19, but Turkey's serve reception was disrupted and they extended the lead again to 23-20, and Miyabe's service ace and a block point made it 25-20 to take the set.
In the early part of the fourth set, both teams traded side outs. Japan held on in the receiving and took a 7-5 lead, but Turkey fought back with blocks and spikes to tie the score at 10-10. Japan was broken down by serves and allowed a 12-14 lead, but Wada and Ishikawa scored on tosses made by the receive to tie the score at 18-18. However, Turkey's blocks and service aces gradually widened the gap, and in the end, Turkey's spikes were successful, causing Japan to lose the set 22-25.
The opening of the final fifth set was a back-and-forth battle, but Shimamura's block and Wada and Sato's spikes gave Japan a 7-4 lead. The opponent's mistakes extended the lead to 11-7, and Ishikawa scored consecutive spikes to make it 13-8. Finally, Ishikawa's service ace made it 15-9, and Japan won the set count 3-2.
