The Elk Mountain trail is certainly one of the less traveled trails in the park, so here you can avoid the crowds and get amazing vistas. In fact, we hiked during the peak of tourist season (August 12, 2025) and only saw one other human the entire day! No parking issues, no pass or ticket issues, and no crowds - AT ALL!
It is less traveled because of its location (southern end of the park, and it's difficulty). This trail is only 7.5 miles but it has 3,400 feet of elevation gain. Most of that gain is in about 2 miles and in particular the last 1/2 mile to the summit. That said, the best views usually come from the hiked with the most elevation gain!
