Evgeny Sveshnikov dedicated his entire career to a single variation in the Sicilian Defense, thereby immortalizing his name. He became the last classic to create an entirely new opening. Like the hypermodernists of the early 20th century, he opened up entire new worlds. Therefore, Sveshnikov's name rightfully stands alongside such theoretical giants as Reti, Nimzowitsch, and Rubinstein. Karpov sympathetically asked him, "Maybe we shouldn't play this variation? It doesn't work." Nevertheless, Sveshnikov continued to believe in the variation, developing it, and applying it in practice. And very soon, the variation became a formidable weapon for Black. Many top grandmasters consider the Chelyabinsk Variation a true revolution, or at least an important milestone in the history of chess openings.
