Inserting strategic pauses while lifting weights can increase the tension on specific muscles.
For instance, inserting a 2-second pause at 30 degrees of elbow flexion during a reverse curl can heighten the involvement of the brachialis muscle, particularly if you pause during the concentric (lifting) part of the movement.
Pausing at the top of a lateral raise will increase the overload on the medial deltoid.
