Labour’s NEC has blocked Greater Manchester mayor Andy Burnham from seeking selection for the Gorton and Denton by-election, Labour sources say. The decision was reportedly voted through by the NEC officers’ group, raising the prospect of a major backlash from Burnham allies and senior Labour figures, after Burnham said he wanted to stand when MP Andrew Gwynne steps down.
