The argument in the beginning, happened around the time where Dean was still dealing with the fact that he was Michael's vessel. Buffy, wanted to go fight, not wanting Dean to, because she had lost him once and wasn't planning to again. Dean then starts acting like a jerk, and breaks up with her, in hopes that that would make it easier to leave her, so that he could step up to the plate-- of destiny. He soon realizes that somethings, like love, true love isn't something you could simply get rid of.
