Amy Sillman is a contemporary painter who is interested in the materiality of the medium with humor and from a conceptual angle. She is known for her large-scale work, gestural abstraction and caricatural figuration. In 2009, Sillman announced in Bomb Magazine his break with abstraction. In parallel to his painting, Sillman produces fanzines, makes drawings and iPad animations.
Sillman received her BFA from the School of Visual Arts in 1979 and her MFA from Bard College in 1998. She was influenced by Philip Guston and Willem de Kooning. She has received numerous prizes and awards, including a Guggenheim Fellowship, the Louise Comfort Tiffany Foundation Award, a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship, and the Elaine de Kooning Memorial Fellowship. Sillman has exhibited widely, including at Sikkema Jenkins & Co in New York, Captain-Petzel in Berlin and Thomas Dane in London. one lump or two, his first museum exhibition, opened in 2013 at the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston, then traveled to the Aspen Art Museum and the Hessel Art Museum. Sillman's works are among the permanent collections of MoMA and the Whitney Museum in New York, the Brooklyn Museum, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
