Surah 029 – Al-‘Ankabūt (The Spider) – Makki

Surah Al-‘Ankabūt, the twenty-ninth chapter of the Holy Quran, is a Makki Surah that focuses on trials of faith, perseverance, and the reality of worldly weakness without Allah’s support. Named after the spider, whose fragile web symbolizes the weakness of relying on anything other than Allah, this Surah teaches believers that true strength lies only in sincere faith and trust in Allah. It highlights the struggles faced by believers and reassures them that trials are a necessary test of sincerity.

Reason of Revelation (Asbāb an-Nuzūl):

Surah Al-‘Ankabūt was revealed at a time when early Muslims in Makkah were facing intense persecution and hardship. Some believers questioned why suffering continued despite their faith. This Surah was revealed to clarify that trials are a means to distinguish true believers from false claimants of faith. Through examples of earlier nations and prophets, Allah reminded believers that patience, steadfastness, and reliance upon Him always lead to eventual success.

Selected Arabic Verse:

مَثَلُ ٱلَّذِينَ ٱتَّخَذُوا۟ مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ أَوْلِيَآءَ كَمَثَلِ ٱلْعَنكَبُوتِ ٱتَّخَذَتْ بَيْتًۭا

English Translation:

“The example of those who take protectors other than Allah is like that of the spider who builds a house.”
