Shared System Tutorials | Part 1 | Where Do I Begin?

This is part one of my Shared System tutorial series. The Shared System is a flagship layout from MakeNoise, but it's also a relatively simple and straightforward mono synth. In fact, it used to be my Beginner Case in 2018. If you want to learn fundamental modular synthesis techniques, I lot of info in this series can be translated to your own modules. And if not, you may need to do some work on your collection.

This series is designed for owners, still unfamiliar with the millions of possibilities this system offers. They'll not going to be technical nor difficult and they will address basic concepts of westcoast synthesis where everything is a bit different from using a voice, a filter and some effects. In this first part I'll only use the two sinewaves from the DPO and a bit of echo and reverb. It will work for any complex VCO like Brenso, Cs-L, the Buchla TTA 259, Furthrrr Generator, etc. It even works for the dual 258T VCO. If you have two sines and FM inputs, you can try it.

Note: i did not own an original B&G optomix when making this video. My case is a collection of second hand B&G components because I started with an old silver CV-bus shared system. The markers on my Optomix panel are different from the original. I was able to replace it later. I also decided to start this series with a B&G system without the 'plus' (new Rene Mk2, Tempi & Morphagene). The new modules will join in at later episodes. There's a lot to come!

Jean Baptiste Fourier (18th century) proved that all repeating sounds are sums of one or more sinewaves, which is literally the foundation of all FM and additive synthesis methods. This also means it should be possible to create a huge amount of sounds with just sinewaves. DPO has two. Let's find out what they can do on their own. In the next videos I'll introduce more modules and modulation, but we'll take it one step at a time. Hope you like it. If you don't, please share why not.
