Lesson 26 – Past Continuous Tense | آموزش زبان انگلیسی –گذشته استمراری

Welcome to Lesson 26 of our English course.
In this lesson, you will learn Past Continuous (گذشته استمراری) and how to talk about actions that were in progress in the past, interrupted actions, background actions in stories, and two actions happening at the same time.

در این درس یاد می‌گیرید چطور درباره‌ی کارهایی که در گذشته در حال انجام بوده‌اند صحبت کنید؛ مخصوص مکالمه، داستان‌گویی و موقعیت‌های واقعی.



Form (ساختار):
Subject + was / were + verb + ing

I / He / She / It → was
You / We / They → were

Examples:
I was studying English.
She was watching TV.
They were working late.



Negative (منفی):
was / were + not + verb-ing

I wasn’t listening.
She wasn’t feeling well.
They weren’t waiting.



Questions (سوالی):
Was / Were + subject + verb-ing?

Was she cooking?
Were you studying last night?
What were they doing?



Time Expressions (قیدهای زمانی رایج):
at 7 pm – at that moment – all day – while – when

I was working at 9 pm.
She was sleeping at that moment.



Past Continuous + Simple Past (نکته طلایی):
Past Continuous → کار در حال انجام
Simple Past → کاری که آن را قطع می‌کند

I was sleeping when the phone rang.
She was driving when the accident happened.
We were having dinner when he arrived.



While vs When:
while → معمولاً Past Continuous
when → معمولاً Simple Past

While I was studying, my brother was watching TV.
I was studying when my brother came home.



Two actions at the same time:
I was cooking while she was cleaning.
They were talking while the kids were playing.



Storytelling:
It was raining.
People were running.
Cars were stopping.



Common mistakes:
❌ I was study yesterday
✅ I was studying yesterday

❌ She were sleeping
✅ She was sleeping

❌ When I was sleeping, the phone was ringing
✅ When I was sleeping, the phone rang



Past Continuous vs Simple Past:
Simple Past → finished action
I watched TV

Past Continuous → action in progress
I was watching TV



Full example:
Yesterday at 9 pm, I was studying English.
While I was studying, my phone rang, so I stopped and answered it.
