This is the original recording by K2 (Keith and Ken). This was recorded for us, as a demo by Poacher, and we sent their demo to various publishers. Eventually, Catherine Courage Music contracted the song and Clive Bruce released it on the album 'Forget Me Not'
Origin of the song:
My brother, Keith, and I liked a song called ‘Ebony Eyes', which was the 'B' side of the single 'Walk Right Back', (recorded by the Everly Brothers). We decided to see if we could write a song with a similar mood (in the Everly Brothers style). Keith came back the next day with the outline for ‘Mary’. We both worked on it and sent it to various music publishers. Eventually, we received a publishing contract with Catharine Courage music and then…..silence.
Occasionally, we would enter quiz competitions on the local radio, and would sometimes win an album (whatever prize they were giving away at the time).
One morning, I opened the door to find a parcel on the doorstep. It turned out to be a copy of a ‘country’ album by the South African ‘country music artiste’ Clive Bruce.
I thought it was probably an album from the local radio station relating to a competition that I had entered.
On side one (vinyl album), the second track was called ‘Mary’. I played it and ‘YES’, it was our song!
The publishers had sent the album to us without informing us in advance that it had been recorded and released on a record.
Unfortunately, the song did not go on to achieve the success that we (or Clive Bruce) would have hoped for (but nevertheless, we felt pleased that Clive Bruce liked one of our songs well enough to want to record it. We are also very pleased with his arrangement and recording of the song....thank you, Clive!).
