This morning we’re strolling through Seoul's Bukchon Hanok Village, wedged between Gyeongbokgung and Changdeokgung Palaces. A hanok is a traditional Korean wooden courtyard house, carefully designed to breathe with the seasons. More than 900 traditional hanok homes have stood on these lanes for centuries, surviving war, rapid development, and real-estate booms.
Some homes now host guest stays, craft studios or tea rooms, but many remain family houses. That’s why new rules limit visiting hours to 10 AM-5 PM and ask everyone to keep voices down, out of respect for the residents who live here. A quick heads up: if you show up outside that window, you might face a fine.
The hills are steep, yet every turn rewards you with curved rooflines silhouetted against Bugaksan mountain and narrow stone paths that feel paused in time.
