Schubert: Piano Sonata No. 20 in A Major, D. 959-IV. Rondo. Allegretto, A Major, 4/4 time, Rondo form (Analysis)
This work, one of the most monumental in scale and profound in inner depth that Schubert ever composed, is the second of his final three piano sonatas (D. 958, D. 959, D. 960) and was completed in September 1828, about two months before his death. A masterpiece that dramatically unites lyricism and drama, it embodies a coexistence of transcendent beauty and deeply human emotion, and is especially admired for its expansive structure and refined harmonic language.
IV. Rondo. Allegretto, A Major, 4/4 time, Rondo form
It opens with an elegant and lively principal theme, followed by a series of varied transformations and contrasting episodes, and concludes with a bright and hopeful ending.
