Critics say NJ’s TANF assistance program needs urgent reform

A key safety net for families living in extreme poverty is shrinking at a time when the need is surging. According to advocates and policy experts, fewer New Jersey families are taking advantage of the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families Program (TANF), NJ’s main cash assistance program because of built-in bureaucratic barriers.
