Interview with John D.C. Linnell
John D.C. Linnell is a leading Norwegian wildlife biologist and senior researcher at the Norwegian Institute for Nature Research (NINA). He is internationally known for his work on large carnivores — especially wolves, bears, lynx, and wolverines — and for studying how these species coexist with humans in modern landscapes. Linnell has advised numerous European governments and international organisations, contributed to IUCN specialist groups, and authored hundreds of scientific publications. His research focuses on conservation policy, human–wildlife coexistence, and evidence-based management of large carnivore populations.
We will be discussing large carnivores, using as one example the town of Băile Tușnad in Romania, where people have learned to coexist successfully with bears — a model that could serve as an example for many other places.
I will ask Linnell what he thinks about the proposed downlisting of wolves’ conservation status in Europe, and whether this change would give an even greater role to science. I will also ask whether European countries should cooperate more closely on lynx restoration, and whether our perspective on large carnivores is too often shaped solely through the lens of human interests.
