The Wedge vs. a Punch! Basic Self Defense in Bagua Kuntao Silat

The Wedge is a skeletal structure that is seen in many martial arts, especially Baguazhang, Serak and Cimande Silat, but is typically performed as a part of a transitional movement. However, The wedge position is an exceptionally strong physical structure and can be used for a variety of defenses and attacks in martial arts especially as an entry or precursor to a follow-up technique. As stated in the video, what is demonstrated is a very basic usage of the wedge concept, but still valuable for the student or anyone else that incorporates the idea and practices for self defense. It is truly surprising how well the wedge structure works when properly applied. Remember to drive forward with the hips and entire skeleton in the wedge structure with the legs driving through the opponent in order to explosively impact their skeleton and turn their spine thereby disrupting their center and balance. Follow-up attacks are at the discretion and ability of the Bagua Kuntao Silat practitioner.


This video is a basic self defense exposition on execution of the wedge, but be aware at intermediate levels the wedge is used with more sophistication for strikes, throws, weapons, etc. due to its surprising and overwhelming nature when properly applied. Simple yet effective, therefore, naturally a part of the Bagua Kuntao Silat curriculum.


When using the wedge in sparring or fighting, the practitioner will note the effects of the impact and breakdown of the opponent's alignments. That will guide the practitioner to the appropriate combinations and follow-ups to end the encounter. Sometimes, simply using the wedge to blow through a person and continue to run past is enough to avoid injury or further problems where other techniques simply would not have worked as necessary, or even at all. While Bagua Kuntao Silat practitioners rather avoid incoming force if possible, it occasionally isn't possible, and the wedge allows an alternative. The wedge is not a block, but is an attack on your opponent's skeleton which happens to provide great benefits to the practitioner. Bagua Kuntao Silat is kung fu that works!
