The shin is extensively used in Bagua Kuntao Silat for striking, throwing, crashing through defenses, destroying an incoming strike, compressions, submission techniques, bone breaks, leverage, support and other more sophisticated uses during self defense, sparring or fighting. This video shows provides a fundamental understanding of the construction of the shin and some small, slow motion demonstrations of the shin with corresponding footwork in the internal martial art of Bagua Kuntao Silat.
Proper utilization of the shin can greatly magnify the practitioner's effectiveness in a self defense situation or even diffuse a confrontation with little or no injury as a mechanism for throwing without hard striking or painful jointlocks when practiced and appropriately executed. Taking control of an opponent's balance and center when entering and delivering heavy continuous strikes while moving to throw is incredibly disorienting unless the person is used to defending and feeling those movements-- very few people are.
Knowing the strengths of your own physiology and structure while understanding the weaknesses of the opponent is part of every martial artist's journey, and appropriate comprehension of the shin for a Bagua Kuntao Silat is certainly required as a fundamental component of the body and it's usage. The shin can be used while simply walking as a weapon, and almost effortless impacts which devastate the opponent's balance and structure is the goal.
