“O mio babbino caro” (“Oh my dear Papa”) is the only true aria in Gianni Schicchi by Giacomo Puccini, with a libretto by Giovacchino Forzano. While the opera itself is a sharp comedy filled with deception and family conflict, this aria pauses the chaos to reveal something disarmingly sincere.

Sung by Lauretta, it is a gentle plea to her father at a moment when love and family loyalty collide. Against a backdrop of scheming and hypocrisy in medieval Florence, Lauretta’s voice cuts through with youthful devotion and emotional clarity. Its simplicity is precisely what gives the aria its lasting power.

Songs Without Words is inspired by Felix Mendelssohn’s lyrical piano works, where the piano sings without lyrics, carrying emotion, memory, and meaning through melody alone. The idea of expressing stories through music — without words, without lyrics — has always fascinated me, and led me to create this series.

My version of Songs Without Words brings together melodies from different cultures, eras, and traditions — from classical music to operatic arias, from popular songs to folk melodies — curated into distinct sub-collections, each exploring a different musical heritage, carefully arranged, adapted, and improvised.
