A pond scene created around 2,700 years ago. Solid tiger-shaped support, mischievous dragons climb on the rim. Fishes, frogs and waterfowls enjoy themselves inside the vessel.
Without water inside, these birds and animals stay static. But when water is poured through hands into this vessel, instantly, a shoal appears. The animals come alive. The rippling water shimmers, in which fish swim and frogs croak. What a lovely natural scene.
In the early Spring and Autumn period, Dashi [a high-ranking official] of the State of Jin commissioned for his wife Zhong Jiang this Pan vessel. The inscription, written in 32 characters, prays for longevity.
"Treasures in Shanghai Museum" is a mini-documentary series that features the treasures and their timeless stories, co-presented by Shanghai Museum and Shanghai Media Group (SMG).
