2024 SACM Jazz Fest Collab & Composition Concert
Baxter Concert Hall
27 September 2024
In April of 2024, lecturers in the African Music and Jazz sections of the SACM initiated the Creative Collab Project. This is an exploratory initiative to invigorate our curriculum and interdisciplinary activities. ‘Creative Collab Week’ facilitated opportunities for Jazz and African Music students to learn and develop musical pathways outside their normal instruction during a week of integrated practical activities. The week’s activities included guidance, a workshop and a performance by Professor Dizu Zungula Mzikantu Plaatjies on the day of his departure for a performance in Germany. Students also received mentorship by celebrated SACM graduate Mandisi Dyantyis shortly before he departed for the International Global Jazz Day Festival in Tangier. We sincerely thank them both for their time, musicality and generosity. Student artists participated in rehearsals, improvisation, ensemble playing and composition workshops throughout the week. The project resulted in creative material and discussions developed by them during the practical sessions, culminating in a public performance. Tonight, we present two of the original works created during this process. We anticipate this is an opportunity for musical innovation and the meaningful exchange of collaborative creative ideas for staff and students at the SACM.
