Today we continue our Navigraph Academy Pilot Training with Part 5, focusing on the fundamentals of Take-Offs and Landings — the two most critical phases of any flight.
You’ll take your first structured steps into departure and arrival technique, building the speed control, pitch attitude, and coordination required to fly safely and confidently. We won’t yet fly a full traffic pattern, but by the end of this lesson you’ll understand how and why each phase works.
And remember the golden rule of aviation:
Takeoffs are optional. Landings are mandatory.
Later in the stream, we’ll switch gears and begin planning tonight’s VATSIM flight, taking the Boeing 737 from Denver (KDEN) to Las Vegas (KLAS) — applying good procedural thinking from GA all the way up to airline ops.
Route: Training Area / Runway Operations
Aircraft: GA Training Aircraft (Cessna 172)
Simulator: Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024
What to Expect
Part 5 of our Navigraph Academy course.
A clear breakdown of take-off and landing theory.
Speed, pitch, and attitude control explained visually and practically.
Understanding rotation, climb-out, approach, flare, and rollout.
Key airspeeds every pilot must memorise.
Later: VATSIM flight planning for KDEN → KLAS in the B737.
About the Training — Take-Offs & Landings
This lesson is divided into two parts.
Today’s focus: theory, techniques, and take-off practice.
Next lesson: landing execution from final approach.
Take-Off Phase
We’ll break the take-off into four clear segments:
Ground Acceleration
Full power on the runway
Maintain centreline
Counter left-yaw with coordinated rudder
Rotation
Rotate smoothly at Vr = 55 knots
Establish a controlled take-off attitude
Initial Climb
Slight forward pitch to accelerate
Transition toward best climb speed
Final Climb
Establish Vy = 75 knots
Maintain coordination and stable climb
Memorise: Vr = 55 knots, Vy = 75 knots
Landing Phase (Theory)
Although we won’t fly the full landing yet, we’ll cover the technique in detail:
Approach:
Stable glide path
~70 knots on final
Threshold:
Reduce to 61 knots
Aim for correct PAPI (2 white / 2 red)
Flare & Touchdown:
Smooth pitch-up to arrest descent
Main wheels first
Rollout:
Hold attitude briefly
Gentle braking and directional control
Professional pilots aim to cross the threshold on speed and on profile — this habit starts now.
Checklists, Flows & Technique
We’ll also reinforce the difference between:
Flows — memory-based action sequences
Checklists — written confirmation after the flow
These habits form the backbone of safe flying, especially as you progress toward complex aircraft and airliners.
