The 1973 European Ladies Bronze medalist (Karin Iten) died last week of complications from diabetes, kidney, and pancreas failure. Her skating career was cut short by the development of diabetes at a young age, sapping her energy and weakening her jumps. A dynamic Swiss skater, she pioneered what would become the Biellman spin in amateur competition. (It was often done in professional shows, and I have even seen Tamara Zhuk (the great Russian pair skater) do it. A student of Jacgues Gershwiler, she is shown in one picture with him.
The 1973 podium shows Christina Errath (1) and Britains Jean Scott (2nd). Interestingly, the cute little dog in the video and pictures, died just two days after Karin.....I suppose he had to stay with her!!!!!!
She coached and taught a little bit, but was hampered by energy issues. The ring she shows off was given to her by her father. I encourage all skaters to research, study, and develop an adequate nutrition plan for your skating. All this anorexia, and extreme dieting, will only cause serious health issues later in life. (although I don't wish to imply that Karin's diabetes was somehow related to skating......that we do not know).
