San Jose resident stuck in Kabul, Afghanistan Airport terminal overseen by U.S. soldiers. After four days of sleeping on rocks with lack of shelter, Faranaz said many of the thousands of Afghans who initially sought refuge at the terminal after the fall of Kabul now wanted out. People in the camp, most of whom were Muslim, were being fed pork by the U.S.—though most also cannot read the English label, “Pork Sausage Patty, Maple Flavored.” The soldiers threw food and water at by them from a distance.
The camp is where Afghans are waiting to be airlifted out of the country by U.S. aircraft. Faranaz said there’s no count or list of order for which people move to the front of the line. She put her 7-month-old daughter in an empty suitcase to protect her from the elements, which include sand picked up by the winds. But with no other feasible option at the moment, both U.S. soldiers and Taliban fighters surround the airport, Faranaz must wait, just as the thousands who surround her.
