Inkundla in the Xhosa context is the alter and shrine of the family. Inkundla is the symbolic, dwelling place of Ancestors- for many xhosa families, this is the prayer room. It's the space where all children of the family (legitimate or illegitimate) go for prayer, healing and connection.
All rituals and ceremonies are performed enKundleni in "front" the ancestors and the community. It is believed that the soil that iNkundla has been erected upon is sacred and sanctified, as such is also healing all on it's own. Often, by merely stepping barefoot on this soil, healing is provisioned by God.
