Karioitahi Beach
A black sand beach on the west coast of NZ's North island, just an hour's drive from Auckland's city centre. Roughly a 20km stretch of beach starting where the Waikato river mouth's out into the ocean, starting with Pine forest and the more north you go, the more rugged the landscape becomes.
A hidden gem even to some Aucklanders, like us, many come across it by chance and just fell in love with it. Karioitahi Beach has a surreal beauty with a dramatic sight of rugged wind swept cliffs.
It's a west coast beach playground popular for hiking, horse riding, surfing, paragliding, fishing and of course 4 wheel driving, for this though, you do need a permit.
The sand on the northern part of the beach is relatively hard making for easy driving, the southern part has more soft sections for the more adventurous.
Just be sure to check the tides before your visit, especially if you are planning to drive on the beach, the northern and southern parts are only accessible during low tide, allow yourself enough time before the tide comes back in, failure to do so can cost you dearly, many has fallen victim to the tide resulting in many wrecks littering this beautiful beach.
Karioitahi truly is a beautiful beach offering spectacular scenery and is well worth a visit.
