Back at it again with another video for a fictional man's birthday. March 31 is the birthday of my beloved, Krylancelo Finrandi, aka Orphen, the main character from Sorcerous Stabber Orphen.
First off, I am sorry for the aspect ratio. This series is over 20 years old. It doesn't have HD 1080p. Even on the physical releases. I have the DVDs and the bluray and it still looks like that on bluray. I tried my best to get it to fit full screen, but it was very distorted and shitty. So I just left it alone. So if/when I make Orphen videos, it will be in 4:3. Just thought I would get that out of the way.
Brief synopsis of Orphen. Sorcerous Stabber Orphen is an anime series from the late 90s/early 2000s. It has 2 seasons . In 2020 there was a reboot that also had 2 seasons (but half as many episodes). But aside from the characters and some events in the first seasons, the series are completely different. Orphen is an action/adventure fantasy anime about Kyrancelo, an orphan who becomes a student at a magic school called the Tower of Fang where he learns sorcery. His "sister" Azalie, who is also a student with him, gets turned into a dragon by a magic sword. She escapes. Krylancelo turns his back on his school for not doing anything to help Azalie and drops out to go after her. He takes on a new idenity as Orphen (denouncing his name and his former life) and goes on an adventure to rescue her. That's the first season in a nut shell. For this video I only used the first season of the original series.
Anyways.....I LOVE ORPHEN! I've watched both series, the OG and the reboot. I love it all, but my favorite is definitely the first season of the original. The gritty 90s aesthetic and edgy artstyle of it is just gorgeous. It is art. I watched the dub because my favorite anime voice actor, David Matranga, voices Orphen. Orphen was actually his first anime role. When comparing his performance between the original dub and the reboot, you can definitely hear a significant difference in how he has improved as an voice actor (I mean it was like 20 years between the two series). But I love the cringe of the original series. It has a likeable charm to it, in my opinion.
I actually got to meet David Matranga at a con last year in October and we gushed about Orphen together. It was amazing that I was able to have a civilized conversation and say words to my favorite voice actor in person! One of the best moments of my life. David was super nice and seemed really happy that I wanted to talk to him about Orphen because it's not a popular series. I asked him which series he personally likes better and he said "I can't choose favorites. I like them both for different reasons. The original was my first role in anime so it's special to me." That is so precious. And we talked about the tonal shift between the first and second seasons of the original Orphen. He agreed with me that it was super weird. I even got him to sign an Orphen print for me. They were actually put away and he had to go and get one out just for me. I figured it's because Orphen isn't popular and many people don't want signed Orphen prints, but his joy to have a discussion about it with me made me really happy. That whole experience made me love Orphen so much more. I'm hoping to meet David again at a con this summer and maybe talk to him about Orphen again.
So yeah, Orphen is just so cool and badass and sexy. I love him so much. I enjoyed making this video and I hope to make more Orphen videos in the future because he needs more love.
