STORYLINE:

Israeli troops were active in the West Bank town of Jenin on Friday morning, with witnesses reporting exchanges of gunfire and the arrest of at least 15 Palestinian suspects.

The Israeli army said its troops were conducting routine patrols in the town but would give no further details.

Palestinian witnesses said more than 25 armoUred vehicles entered a refugee camp in the town.

Loudspeakers mounted on Israeli vehicles ordered residents to stay indoors.

This was followed by sporadic exchanges of fire between local gunmen and Israeli troops, but no casualties were reported.

Among those reportedly detained were Attar Abu Remeli, a local leader from Palestinian Leader Yasser Arafat's Fatah party and two militants from the Al Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades, a militia loosely affiliated to Fatah.

Also reported arrested was the father and four brothers of a man who carried out a suicide bombing two years ago, witnesses said.
