I open up a huge transformer, 50kva! I've always wondered what was inside these big things and how they work. In this video we open one up to check it out. Then I hook it up to my cheap reliable 3000 watt inverter to see the power output. I measure phantom draw. Also, I move around some wires to demonstrate how the transformer can be used in different applications.
I'm experimenting with this to figure out if I should use it as part of my off-grid setup. I am toying with the idea of buying a "European" inverter, basically one that can put out 240v on one leg. Then I can use this transformer to make the 120/240 split phase we use here in North America.
A large transformer like this is not usually found in residential. It is usually used in industrial applications.
