For people to understand what I do in my paintings, it's first helpful to demonstrate and briefly talk about two important aspects of picture making: composition and mark making.
Doing simple exercises such as the ones I show here can help you get the basics of success in drawing and painting. In composition you have to divide up the picture plane in fascinating ways to create interest and prevent monotony. In mark making you need to find a range of marks in either paint or drawing media to create unity, variety and tension. It doesn't seem advisable or even possible to hide your mark in picture making, so the issue requires your attention. Everyone's mark will be different, but everyone who makes pictures needs to explore ways to make the widest range of marks. These marks are like a visual vocabulary.
