In this second part of our GI embryology series, Professor Zach Murphy continues exploring the development of the gastrointestinal tract, focusing on the detailed anatomy and vascular organization of the foregut, midgut, and hindgut. This lecture highlights the embryologic origins of the gut’s major segments and the arteries that supply them—celiac trunk, superior mesenteric artery, and inferior mesenteric artery—along with their associated derivatives.
Zach then walks through the complex process of gut rotation, explaining how the midgut herniates, rotates 270 degrees counterclockwise, and ultimately returns to the abdominal cavity. We also discuss the formation and rearrangement of mesenteries, which suspend and anchor intraperitoneal organs, while delineating which structures become secondary retroperitoneal.
