Silvretta Road and Gravel ride in the Alps

Road and Gravel ride from Gaschurn to the Wiesbadener Hut via Kopps and Silvretta Stausee in the Austrian Alps with Eddie (@markus.wollenberger)

This is old home turf, and I always wanted to ride a bike up the Silvretta Hochalpen Strasse. Sadly, the road was closed due to a landslide. This meant we couldn’t loop this route and had to go up past Kopps Stausee and then return the same way. Still very pretty and plenty of steep climbing on that route.

I rented a bike in Bregenz and it did surprisingly well. Scary tires on that thing and getting used to a new geometry and stuff while doing a big ride is always fun. But again, worked out surprisingly well. Just didn’t trust the tires on the gravel descent from the Wiesbadener Hut back to Silvretta Stausee, which meant going a little slower.

Hitting some sweet top speeds of 80 kilometers/hour on the butter smooth descent from the Bielerhoehe (Silvretta Stausee).

This ride also covers two Austrian states, Vorarlberg and Tyrol, fun side fact.

In the planning stages, we were wondering how seriously the closure of the Silvretta Hochalpenstrasse was, maybe we could get through on bikes? Fat no.
