Geared steam locomotives are any kind of steam locomotive that utilize a gearing system on their drive train. Traditional steam locomotives have direct drive without any sort of gearing, and this is because direct drive allows for much higher speeds. But gearing systems have benefits, mostly involving the potential tractive effort, and in certain applications geared steam locomotives, like Shays, Heislers, and Climaxes, have proven incredibly useful.
