Ireland: Intrada from Miniature Suite

This “Villanella”, a charming miniature by John Ireland, was the perfect way to showcase some of the organ’s more delicate stops.

John Ireland may be best known today in church circles, especially for his choral motet “Greater Love Hath No Man”, but I was delighted to discover this work, which belonged to a set of three miniatures from 1904 that Ireland said were “for my own use”. Ireland had recently been appointed Organist at St Luke’s in Chelsea.

In contrast to Villanella, the Intrada is an approachable, straightforward work with a beautiful, bucolic melody and rich late-Romantic harmonies.
