In this video, I share a simple but important discussion on Sustainability in Agriculture with a group of grassroots farmers who mainly practice chemical-based farming. During a small workshop, I asked them a basic question: “What does sustainability in agriculture mean?”
Through this conversation, I tried to create awareness about why, in today’s scenario, our farming systems are struggling to remain sustainable. Excessive use of chemical fertilizers has reduced soil fertility, and indiscriminate pesticide use has eliminated many natural enemies that once kept pests under control. As a result, we now face pest resurgence, higher input costs, and declining profits—making many farmers feel that agriculture is no longer a viable option for the next generation.
I encouraged farmers to reduce their dependence on chemicals and take practical steps toward sustainability. Since most participants were paddy farmers, I emphasised the importance of growing green manure crops, improving soil health, and using water judiciously. Protecting the ecosystem around the farm allows natural enemies to thrive, reducing pest pressure naturally.
Sustainability simply means managing our natural resources—soil, water, biodiversity—in a balanced way so that both today’s farmers and future generations can continue to rely on agriculture.
This discussion was a small effort to spark reflection and inspire farmers to move toward a more sustainable farming future.
