Spiagge a Setubal Portogallo 3: Santuario de Nossa Senhora do Cabo Espichel e Praia do Creiro

Cabo Espichel è uno dei luoghi più impressionanti della Costa Azul per il paesaggio naturale che la circonda. Svolse funzioni di difesa del territorio finché, in tempi di maggiore tranquillità da un punto di vista militare, vi fu costruito un santuario dedicato a Nossa Senhora do Cabo. La chiesa è fiancheggiata da un complesso di edifici conventuali che servivano per dare asilo ai pellegrini che giungevano sin lì. Costruita nel 1701, è un edificio in stile barocco, il cui progetto è attribuito all’architetto João Antunes.
L’interno custodisce testimonianze artistiche di valore, in particolare il retablo dell’altare maggiore in stile barocco nazionale con l’immagine di Nossa Senhora do Cabo, le pitture in prospettiva che decorano il soffitto (eseguite nel 1740 da pittore Lourenço da Cunha) e i dipinti cinquecenteschi opera del Mestre da Lourinhã, che raffigurano San Giacomo e Sant’Antonio, custoditi nella sagrestia. Si segnala inoltre la tribuna sull’altare maggiore, destinata alle visite reali.
Ad alcuni metri dal santuario esiste anche un piccolo eremo, l’Ermida da Memória, del XV secolo, precedente al santuario. L’interno è rivestito da pannelli di azulejos settecenteschi che narrano la leggenda della Senhora do Cabo. Secondo la tradizione, la Vergine sarebbe apparsa in questo luogo a una coppia di anziani, nel 1410.
Vicino a São Lourenço troviamo la spiaggia di Creiro o Anicha, situata vicino al pittoresco Portinho da Arrábida, una delle destinazioni più popolari del Parco Naturale di Arrábida.
Questa spiaggia è circondata da uno scenario spettacolare che ricorda le spiagge paradisiache del sud-est asiatico, ed è quindi la preferita dalle famiglie con bambini piccoli.
Sul lato orientale della spiaggia, generalmente più tranquillo, si trovano diversi scogli e un piccolo isolotto vulcanico noto come Pedra da Anicha. Qui si trovano diversi ristoranti specializzati in pesce fresco e frutti di mare.

Cabo Espichel is one of the most impressive places on the Costa Azul due to the natural landscape that surrounds it. It served as a defense for the territory until, in times of greater military tranquility, a sanctuary dedicated to Nossa Senhora do Cabo was built there. The church is flanked by a complex of convent buildings that served to shelter pilgrims who came there. Built in 1701, it is a Baroque-style building, whose design is attributed to the architect João Antunes.
The interior houses valuable artistic testimonies, especially the retable of the high altar in the national Baroque style with the image of Nossa Senhora do Cabo, the perspective paintings that decorate the ceiling (made in 1740 by the painter Lourenço da Cunha) and the sixteenth-century paintings by Mestre da Lourinhã, which depict Saint James and Saint Anthony, kept in the sacristy. Also noteworthy is the grandstand on the high altar, intended for royal visits.
A few meters from the sanctuary there is also a small hermitage, the Ermida da Memória, from the 15th century, which predates the sanctuary. The interior is covered with 18th-century azulejo panels that tell the legend of Senhora do Cabo. According to tradition, the Virgin appeared in this place to an elderly couple in 1410.
Near São Lourenço we find Creiro or Anicha beach, located next to the picturesque Portinho da Arrábida, one of the most popular destinations in the Arrábida Natural Park.
This beach is surrounded by spectacular scenery that recalls the paradise beaches of Southeast Asia, and is therefore a favorite among families with small children.
On the eastern side of the beach, which is generally quieter, there are several rocks and a small volcanic islet known as Pedra da Anicha. Here you will find several restaurants specializing in fresh fish and seafood.
