We took our first subsistence dipnetting trip to the mighty Copper River-and camped in a beautiful spot!
As subsistence permit holders and rural Alaska residents, we are allowed to start fishing early (and keep fishing later) than regular personal use fisheries, as well as an increased limit of 500 fish.
We traveled to the community of Chitina, unloaded the ATV, and started exploring. After a day of fishing, we cooked our catch over the fire with some wild foraged edibles to go with it.
These fish are prized for their fat & omega content, and world renowned.
This is the first of many trips to fill our freezer with salmon to help sustain us through the winter. We are excited to get to work, and feeling blessed to have to opportunity to participate!
'til next week,
Dennis, Amy & Lena
